It’s About Winning, Stupid!Democrats are a fractious bunch, at best. We’re idealistic and believe in saving the environment, developing wind power over drilling oil and that human rights should be universal. We believe in the American dream of jobs that pay well, food prices that should be affordable and universal health care (you know, like they have in Canada, Great Britain, and Sweden.) Idealistic goals are all fine and good, but unless you’re in power, you don’t get to implement any dreams or policies. And the lack of bounce in the polls from the selection of Biden as VP has me worried. Getting the job done politically in America, is about winning the office you’re running for, a concept, which seems to gone over Democratic heads. Obama could have very easily united the Democratic Party by selecting Hillary Clinton as his Vice Presidential candidate and adding her 18 million votes to his. Instead, he’s managed to alienate her constituents again, by not having her on his short list and by the rumors that are circulating that his campaign notified her campaign that she was not going to get the VP nod before he made the phone call to her. Although the Clintons come with enough baggage, to become a Louis Vuitton line with very little effort, Bill Clinton was the first Democratic President since Jimmy Carter, and lasted for two terms, even though he had scandals popping up on a regular basis. Hillary Clinton got and I’ll repeat this, 18 million votes in the Presidential primaries. 21% of which have said they’d vote for McCain instead of Obama. Selecting a VP is not like picking a wife. You select a VP to bring in the states and support you don’t have. You don’t have to like them (Kennedy and Johnson) you just have to put up with them long enough to get elected. And then you can sentence them to “funeral duty” if you really hate working with them. There’s always a dignitary dying somewhere. I’ve watched two very capable Democratic candidates blow elections against George Bush. Okay, let’s repeat this…against George Bush. This should tell you that the Republicans are organized, and are in touch with their base and ALL parts of their party from people so conservative they don’t believe in Darwin, to Reganite Republicans who actually don’t believe that Hollywood is the new Sodom and Gomorrah. Democrats, not so much. The votes Democrats gave to Ralph Nader in Florida could have won the Presidential election in 2000. So, it’s not just Obama who’s giving the race to Republicans. It’s also a splintered Democratic Party who is handing elections over to Republicans. I’m an idealist, but I thought we wanted the Republicans out of the Whitehouse? Ummm, that means you have to vote for the Democratic candidate. There is a multi part solution for this. 1. Force the Democrats to recognize that if they don’t vote for Obama, they are responsible for voting McCain into office. Do you sell your soul to become President and compromise what you believe in to get elected? Well, yes. You then redeem yourself as every good policy is implemented, in every ideal you bring to life and in every Supreme Court Judge you get appointed. But first, you have to win the election.
