Giant Sucking Sound - Sarah Palin

The Republicans are master manipulators of the American public. Political campaigns are inherently dirty. And Sarah Palin is the giant sucking sound being heard by the Obama campaign, taking all the wind out of their sails.

Pay attention people, Machiavelli would have been proud of the McCain campaign.

John McCain had no intention of announcing his VP pick on the last day of the Democratic convention. It would have been crass, by everyone’s standards. Instead, he announced the next day so that Obama got no weekend press. No momentum could be generated from his speech, because the question on everyone’s lips were - WTF is Sarah Palin?

Hillary Clinton knows this giant sucking sound well. When a little known Senator named Barack Obama came out of nowhere to derail Clinton’s bid for the Presidency, part of this was the press’ love of new and shiny people. And where the press goes, so goes the undecided.

Hoosiers for the Hot Chick (actual Palin pin at RNC)

At first glance, Sarah Palin’s family life looks like a train wreck. I swear, if someone said her husband was having an affair with Angelina Jolie, I would yawn. After all the rumors, and press releases about the family, I’m on Palin overload.

Why are we discussing the Palin family? Well, it seems as though before Sarah Palin is ready for prime time, and before she’s ready to make her solo debut before reporters and without a tele-prompter, she needs more briefing. Nature abhors a vacuum, especially an information vacuum during election season. So everyone’s talking what’s known about her, which is very little and that includes her family, which is very much of a setup. And the press and the Democrats are taking the bait and falling into the trap.

We tend to gravitate towards things that are familiar, which is why Palin resonates so strongly with so many people. (Honestly, everything that’s happened in the Palin family has happened in ours, with the exception of political office and archaic views. And, I’m pretty sure most members of my family know more about foreign policy.) However, her politics are not mine. She’s pro-life with no exceptions for rape or incest. Pro guns. I’m middle of the road on guns since I grew up in the South. I do know, it doesn’t take an AK7 to shoot Bambi’s mom, which if cooked well done, I would eat. I don’t see the need for anything past a revolver and shotgun. Automatic weapons and cop killer bullets being generally available is just a bad idea.

While Mayor of a small Alaskan town (my town in New Jersey is smaller and I’m a female, so please spare me any sexist crap) she asked the Librarian about banning books. She then went through the motions of getting the Librarian fired. So even then, she was not abusing power to get what she wanted, without coming right out and saying something that would give people ammunition to use against her. I practically lived in libraries while I was growing up. The idea of trying to force someone to ban a book is Hitlerian to me.

As Governor, she’s being investigated for trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired. The brother-in-law is a schmuck and probably should have been fired at the time the incidents happened. But to wait two years after the incidents, use a staff member to do your dirty work and then fire your Safety Commission, because he won’t fire someone who has straightened up and is flying right, is abuse of power. And we’re all a little tired of abuse of power and political corruption. Especially from someone who hasn’t been in the political arena for that long.

She believes in creationism. And that it should be taught in schools with Darwinism. There is a reason for the separation of Church and State. It’s in our Constitution. Teach creationism in Church, as it is part of Faith. Teach Darwinism in schools as it is part of Science. Let the students sort this out privately and let’s avoid rehashing lawsuits we’ve already had about the issue.

It’s hasn’t been two weeks yet and Sarah Palin is beginning to remind me of Dick Cheney. When’s the last time he was interviewed by someone? And don’t his family values disconnect from what’s actually going on in his family?

So, what can the Obama campaign do? That’s the next article.

__________

Hubby’s joke for Sarah Palin: What’s the difference between a Sarah Palin and a pitbull…$247 million dollars in earmarks for a bridge to “no where.” Which the Federal Government let Alaska keep.
