Dem Wars - The Story So Far

I didn’t cover Hillary Clinton’s speech last night. I was crying before the video introducing her had ended. And I was in no state to write by the end of her speech. Since I’m obviously a supporter, let’s skip and summarize our convention so far.

Monday - President Carter gives a wave to the audience. WTF was up with that? We only have two living Democratic Presidents. Since Obama needs all the endorsements he can get, and Carter hates Bush, I would have been more inclined to let him speak.

CNN and FOX (FOX, because I believe in keeping track of the enemy) did not carry the speeches, but had commentators on during the speeches instead. Why?

In the past, the media had been placed right next to the stage and the “command booth” for the convention. During the 2004 convention, the balloons did not go down as planned. And what went out over the air, was a very angry producer screaming and cursing to get the f*ckin* balloons down.

The media is no where near the stage and the command center in 2008. So now, instead of being able to grab speakers as soon as they come off the podium, the media has to use cell phones and contact the departing speakers or set up their interviews in advance.

In retaliation, they are just not covering the speakers unless they have interviews set up.

Michelle Obama gave a great speech.

Tuesday - The Ted Kennedy tribute was great. Even better theatre was Carolyn Kennedy cutting Wolf Blitzer’s off at the knees as he tried to get more information on the process that decided our current VP nominee, Joe Biden.

There were many ways to phrase a refusal for more information, but she chose to be direct and, well, rude. Blitzer didn’t say a word for the rest of the interview and had a Republican who was monitoring the convention tweak him about it later, saying she didn’t know it was that easy to shut him up.

Then came Hillary Clinton. Walking the fine line between getting her 20 million dollar campaign debt paid and whole heartedly endorsing Barack Obama for President, she did exactly what she had to do and gave a mesmerizing speech. The look of trepidation on Michelle Obama’s face before the speech started and Bill Clinton’s mouthing “I love you so much,” added to the overall effect.

Wednesday - I decided this was an excellent day to get drunk during Prime Time. As always in our house, the Mets playing the Phillies, fight for air time with the convention. (The convention, the Olympics, you name it, if the Mets are playing, Hubby has the remote.) We’re staunch Democrats, but the Mets haven’t won a World Series longer than we’ve haven’t had a Democratic President.

I’m a Yankees fan, so I could give a rat’s ass this year.

Hillary Clinton led the call for the nomination of Barack Obama

In order to see the speeches, we switched to CSPAN, (the Mets are tanking against the Phillies, so I’m seeing more convention coverage,) until Melissa Etheridge took the stage. We just looked at each other and switched to FOX.

Hubby pointed out yesterday that the MSNBC Convention logo had a dog, with it’s tail in the air and head in the ground in the negative space around the Democratic donkey. So until Clinton’s speech, I’m off to find their logo.

It’s no surprise that Bill brought the crowd screaming to feet. He gave kudos to Hillary and “gasp” endorsed Barack Obama.

Michelle Obama’s face was even tighter than at the beginning of Hillary’s speech and the relief that she visibly showed early yesterday during Senator Clinton’s speech, wasn’t in sight until Bill was in two thirds through with his speech.

And President Clinton delivered a great unifying speech, that will be very difficult to spin.

My fingers have swollen up, so the alcohol has taken affect. And in the bottom of the 7th, The Phillies are leading the Mets.

While I like David Gergen, I wanted to hear John Kerry’s speaking, so back to CSPAN. Kerry’s speech was very good. And finally, there was Biden.

Well, before there was Biden, there were the Mets. Yeah Mets! Thank you for winning. Hubby’s moods swing with wins and losses.

Peach Schnapps and speeches do not mix. I missed a lot of what Joe Biden had to say.

Thank God every channel replayed the Biden speech. Great speech. Biden is doing exactly what he’s supposed to do, which is aggressively attacking McCain.

So far, this has been the best night of the convention. Dems are now unified and on message. Finally.
