Having an Older Pet - Tales of Miata Kitty 3

Miata Kitty was 19 years old. And tonight was the last night of her life.

While I can still see her moving around out of the corner of my eye, that is only an illusion. I’m forced to find the source of sounds that I would normally attribute to her. And her Daddy and I are crying off and on for a precious life that was too short.

I first met Miata on my husband’s 33rd birthday. My mother-in-law called me into her bedroom and asked me to get Miata out of her box spring.

Mimi K, had decided to make a nest, in a place that my mother-in-law could not access. So, she ripped away the bottom cover of the mattress and crawled in. She would not come out unless she wanted to eat. As everyone who’s dealt with a kitten knows, they come equipped with sharp teeth and claws, and meeting Miata set the pattern of our relationship for years to come.

Everything with Miata was on her terms and this is how she lived her life. She accepted our love and our service to her, but it had to be done her way.

So tonight, while I remember the crazy kitty, who jumped into her first real litter box and started to swim through the litter, the fierce kitten, who attacked Ashes, our dog, during their first meeting and swiped her across the nose, and the loving kitty, who for one year decided that maybe being a lap cat wasn’t so bad, I’ll laugh and I’ll cry.

When I’m up at 4:30 in morning, I will no longer have a companion who demands to be fed. She won’t be barging into the bathroom and waiting for the flush that signifies that I’m at her disposal. There will be no more murder scenes enacted with field mice stupid enough to come into our garage.

Not having Miata Kitty feels weird. Like someone has taken a significant piece of me away. Like an arm, or my heart.

Love ya kiddo. Your Dad and I miss you.

While I do mourn your loss, you have to realize that your cat has lived WAY
longer than most cats do. It's definitely sad for ANYONE to lose a pet,
especially one that's been around for so long in our lives.

I actually lost my
German Shepherd a couple of months ago. Rex was pushing 13 years old. I had got
him for my 14th birthday. He was my only friend, because I had some troubles
with my weight at the time and you know how high school students like to pick on
someone that's not "average".

It brings tears to my eyes, but may they
play together in a better place.
