Having an Older Pet - Tales of Miata Kitty 1Miata kitty is 18 years old. While she's in great shape, she's always been an aloof cat and aging has only made her personality traits stronger. My Mother-in-Law got Miata for my husband's birthday, after we had lost one cat to spinal disease and another to FIV. She was a surprise for Jim, who had adamantly stated that he didn't want another cat. 'cuse me for a minute, she's howling and I have to feed her. Unlike the majority of our pets, who were rescue animals, Miata came from a pet shop. The first time I met her, my Mother-in-Law pulled me to side and whispered, "you have to help me get the kitten!" Because I was limber enough to wriggle under her bed and removed the, at this time unnamed addition to our family from inside the box spring, I got to meet MimiK first. I can tell you, she didn't like to be held then and she doesn't like to be held now. As far as the bottom of the box spring, she'd destroyed it in her three day stay. 'cuse me for a minute, she's howling and I have to fluff up her food. Sorry that took longer than I thought. Went downstairs to fluff and she was nowhere in site. Ran back upstairs to make sure she wasn't throwing up on the oriental rug in the bedroom. Found her in the bathroom, trying to drink from the toilet bowl. Yelled her name and she ran out of the bathroom. We went downstairs and I gave her half a can of cat food to shut her up. Also changed out her water bowl, which was on the low side. SInce she throws up a lot (from the time she was a kitten) I'm not supposed to overfeed her. Once we got her home, we discovered that she was our little "go" kitty. Zipping from one side of the living room where we had her sequestered, to the other. So, we named her Miata kitty, after a popular convertible that had just come on the auto market. The reason we had her locked in the living room? Ashes, our dog had the run of the house. I think Ashes has been through about 5 cats and never had a problem with any of them. But Jim was concerned, so - living room lock-up for the newest member of the family. Miata won my heart when we put out her litter box. She promptly stepped right in, and went swimming in her litter. I don't remember laughing so hard in my life. Since she thought the litter was for playing, we emptied it back into the bag and tore up newspaper for her until she got the idea. 'cuse me for minute, she was howling, but now she's not and she didn't come in to bug me. I need to check the bathroom again. Nope she was at the top of the stairs. This time, she wanted her food fluffed. When we brought Ashes in to meet Miata, Jim insisted we put the dog on a leash. I did, shortened the grip and walked into the living room. So much for the unscheduled outdoor break she thought she was getting. Miata kitty took one look at Ashes, hissed, walked over to her, and quickly swiped one paw across the dog's very sensitive nose. Ashes didn't retaliate, but she did look up at me, as if to say, "Mommy, can we leave now, and can you take that back where you found it?" Of course, they became great friends and playmates. 'cuse me for a minute, I haven't heard the cat in a while, and I have to make sure she's breathing.
